Runaway June Are Better After Bonding With St. Jude Patient Mikey
Hannah Mulholland didn't hesitate when asked who left an impression on the trio during last month's Country Cares weekend.
"He just learned to walk, so he's probably a big handful right now," she says of Mikey. "He had some tumors at two months old and his mom was able to spot it and figure it out, and he's now cancer free."
Country Cares weekend is an annual country music convention in Memphis, Tenn., when hundreds of industry members and artists get together to prepare for upcoming radiothons and events. 2019 will mark the 30th Country Cares after Randy Owen founded the event in 1989. Thus far, more than $800 million has been raised.
The "Buy My Own Drinks" singers say each of the four or five kids they met during this visit left an impression. "They're stronger than we are that's for sure," Runaway June's Jennifer Wayne says. "It's amazing how they always find positivity ... I think we're learning a lot from that."
"We knew it was a happy place," Naomi Cooke adds, "but once you get here you can feel the difference."
From Feb. 7-8, Taste of Country will assist more than a dozen country radio stations in raising money for St. Jude Children's Research Hospital with a webathon/radiothon. Nearly $7 million has been raised during the previous five joint efforts, with much more raised from other TSM stations later in the year. If you'd like to donate, check here for various options.
