Man Hopelessly (And Cluelessly) In Love Shuts Down Highway to Propose

Love was in the air. Traffic was on the ground.

On Sunday, Vidal Navas proposed to his girlfriend, Michelle Wycoff, on I-45 in Houston when he shut the road down to get on bended knee.

Navas, 24, said, “I just wanted to do something different.” Well, mission accomplished. Family and friends followed in cars behind them and then stopped traffic while Navas popped the question.

A series of horns can be heard, although it’s unclear if that’s from people happy for the couple or if commuters were expressing their annoyance at being forced to stop their cars for reasons they probably didn’t know and would probably be even more upset about if they did.

Wycoff put the video on her Instagram page, but it has since been taken down. That may have something to do with the fact the Harris County District Attorney’s Office plans to charge Navas with obstruction of a highway, which actually is a real crime. He faces up to six months in jail, which may throw a bit of wrench into when they’ll tie the knot.

Navas, meanwhile, is backtracking just a bit. “I’m wanting to apologize to everyone if I caused any problems. That wasn’t my intention in the beginning.”

And you’re probably wondering just why he chose that spot in particular to propose, since a highway doesn’t spring to mind as a romantic place along the lines of, say, Paris. Well, Wycoff considers the highway one of her favorite locations.

Navas’ actions certainly sparked controversy with a lively discussion on Reddit and Facebook:
